What it actually means
Grains per pound, sometimes written as humidity ratio or specific humidity, measures the weight of water vapor carried in a pound of dry air. It is the number restorers trust because it does not move when the temperature does. If a room warms up and nothing else changes, relative humidity drops even though not a single drop of water has left. Grains per pound stays flat, and correctly tells you that no drying has occurred.
That property makes it the diagnostic tool on a drying job. Air entering a dehumidifier at a high grain level and leaving at a much lower one proves the machine is condensing water out. A narrow split means the unit is saturated, iced, filled, or undersized for the load. It is the difference between "the equipment is running" and "the equipment is working."
In Florida the outdoor grain level is the reason containment matters. Warm, humid coastal air carries a large amount of water vapor, so every hour a drying chamber is open to outside air, the dehumidifiers spend their capacity on the weather instead of on the wet building.
What it looks like on a real job
A technician records grains per pound at each visit for outside air, an unaffected control room, the affected space, and each dehumidifier’s intake and discharge. The pattern across days is the story: the affected space should trend down toward the control room, and each machine should show a consistent split.
When readings plateau, the causes are almost always mundane and fixable, and the log is what finds them: a door propped open, a condensate line kinked, a filter loaded, or wet material nobody had found yet behind a cabinet run or under a threshold.
Questions we get asked
- Why not just use relative humidity?
- Because relative humidity changes with temperature even when the amount of water in the air has not changed at all. Two readings of 55 percent at different temperatures describe different amounts of water. Grains per pound removes that ambiguity, so it is the number used to compare readings across days and across machines.
- Should I open the windows to help it dry faster?
- In most of Florida, no. Outdoor air is usually carrying more moisture than the air your dehumidifiers have already conditioned, so opening up adds water back into the space and slows the drying. Keep the affected area closed unless your technician specifically asks for ventilation.
