How hard the loss will be to dry, graded 1 to 4 under IICRC S500 by how much wet surface area there is and how tightly the materials hold water.
Once the category is known, the restorer classifies the loss to plan the drying. The S500 standard grades classes 1 through 4 by evaporation load, meaning how much water has to be evaporated out of the affected space and how readily the wet materials will release it. Low class means a small share of the room’s surfaces are wet and the wet materials are mostly non-absorbent. High class means most of the room’s surfaces are wet, absorbent materials are saturated, or both.
Class 4 is a separate case rather than simply the largest one. It describes water held deep inside materials with very low porosity, hardwood flooring, plaster, brick, concrete slab, dense framing. These release moisture slowly no matter how much airflow is thrown at them, so they need specialty methods: injection drying systems, floor drying mats, desiccant dehumidification, and longer drying periods.
The reason a homeowner should care is that class is the honest answer to "why is all this equipment in my house for five days?" Drying is governed by physics, not by preference. The wetter the assembly and the tighter the material, the more equipment and time it takes to bring it back to a documented dry standard.
A supply line that soaked one corner of a tiled bathroom is a low-class loss: a couple of air movers and one dehumidifier, dry in two to three days. A second-floor water heater failure that ran overnight through carpet, pad, drywall, insulation, and the ceiling below is a high-class loss across multiple rooms, with a much larger equipment set and daily monitoring.
Where class matters most on a claim is equipment line items. Insurance estimating software prices air movers and dehumidifiers per unit per day, so the class determination and the moisture readings behind it are what justify the count and the number of days. A drying log that records temperature, relative humidity, and material moisture at each visit is what turns that from an assertion into evidence.
