Physically removing standing and absorbed water on day one, because every gallon extracted is a gallon that does not have to be evaporated.
Extraction is the least glamorous and highest-leverage step in a water loss. Removing water in liquid form takes a fraction of the time and energy that removing the same water as vapor does, so the quality of the extraction on day one largely determines how many days of equipment the job needs afterwards.
It is also more than vacuuming up puddles. Standing water is the visible part; the water held inside carpet cushion, under hard flooring, in the cavity behind baseboard, and inside wall assemblies is the part that dictates the drying plan. Weighted extraction tools press down on carpet and cushion to force absorbed water up into the vacuum path, and specialty tools pull water from beneath hard surface floors and out of wall cavities.
Skipping or rushing extraction is a false economy that shows up on the invoice. Water left in the assembly has to be evaporated instead, which means more air movers, more dehumidification, and more days of both.
On a typical job, extraction follows documentation and precedes everything else: photograph, then extract, then decide what comes out, then set equipment. On contaminated losses extraction happens inside containment and the recovered water is disposed of appropriately rather than poured down a household drain.
A shop vacuum is not an extractor. It will handle a small surface spill, but it cannot pull absorbed water out of cushion or from under flooring, which is exactly the water that causes cupped floors and microbial growth a week later.
