The fine carbon-based residue left by incomplete combustion, which travels far beyond the burn area and behaves differently depending on what burned.
Soot is what is left when combustion is incomplete: mostly carbon, carrying whatever else was in the fuel. Because the particles are so small they behave like a gas, riding thermal currents into wall cavities, up into attics, through door gaps, and into the air handler. This is why a contained kitchen fire produces a claim that covers the whole house, and why "the fire never got past the kitchen" is not a scope boundary.
The type of residue drives the method, which is the part that surprises people. A fast, hot, well-ventilated fire produces dry soot, a powdery residue that vacuums and dry-sponges off surfaces relatively cleanly. A slow, oxygen-starved, smoldering fire, or one involving plastics and synthetics, produces wet smoke: an oily, sticky, strong-smelling residue that smears if approached dry and needs solvent-based cleaning. Protein residue from a cooking fire is nearly invisible, coats everything in a thin amber film, and carries an intense odor that survives ordinary cleaning entirely.
Time is a real cost on a fire loss in a way it is not on most losses. Soot is acidic, and its by-products keep reacting with what they are sitting on. Within days it discolors grout and porous stone, tarnishes metal fixtures, etches glass and appliance finishes, and yellows plastics. The same soot removed in the first week may be permanent damage in the third.
A fire scope starts with identifying the residue types present, often several in one building, and then cleaning from the least to the most aggressive method that works, because the object is to remove the residue without damaging the finish underneath. Dry methods first, then chemical sponges, then appropriate detergents or solvents, with contents handled separately from the structure.
The two items most often underestimated are the HVAC system and the contents. Ductwork holds soot and re-releases it as soon as the system runs, which is why a house can smell fine until the first cool morning. Contents, especially textiles, upholstery, and anything porous, are usually the larger half of the claim by value.
